Wireless routers are a type of
internet router that functions both as a router and wireless access point. Many
companies are using wireless routers to gain access to internet. We have listed
a few key factors for you to understand the different type of wireless routers:
Standards
The first thing to look for in a
wireless router is the wireless communication standards 802.11b, 802.1g and
802.11n. These are simply referred by the letters ‘b’, ‘g’ and ‘n’. First
generation of wireless routers are ‘b’, followed by ‘g’ and ‘n’; with ‘n’ being
the latest one. The primary difference among these routers is in their speeds
and ranges.
Single Band versus Dual Band
Wireless communications operate in two bands of 2.4GHz and
5GHz. Routers that operate only in the band of 2.4GHz are called single band
while wireless n routers that can operate in both bands are routers of dual
band.
2.4GHz band is a frequency also used by other wireless
devices as well therefore there is much interference and crowding resulting in
lower speed and consistency. On the other hand, due to less interference, 5GHz
delivers better performance and coverage than 2.4GHz.
Speed
The speed of wireless routers differs with different
standards affecting the performance of your internet connection too. The speed
of wireless routers increases with the development of technology so 802.11b
provides the lowest speed, while 802.1g provides greater speed followed by
802.11n providing the greatest speed of 300Mbps.
Wired Connectivity
The
wireless routers make use of Ethernet ports for better transmission rates as
the transmission speed of wired Ethernet port are greater than wireless
connections.
Single WAN or Dual WAN
Most
wireless routers provide a single WAN port for internet connection. If that
port fails, one will immediately lose all connection. This could prove
dangerous in business, for your employees can lose access to other employees.
A
wireless router with dual WAN ports ensures connectivity by providing a second
link to the internet in the case first one fails. Therefore it’s a smart choice
to opt for a dual WAN to ensure smooth connectivity to the internet.
